‘Tales of the Empire’ Trailer Breakdown

In a surprise move, Star Wars has sprung a new show onto unsuspecting fans, with a six episode miniseries titled Tales of the Jedi releasing on May 4.

While it seemed that The Acolyte would be the next Star Wars show to hit Disney Plus, fans were treated to a new trailer announcing the animated show which is a continuation of the Tales of the Jedi series.

The trailer opens with Thrawn talking to Morgan Elsbeth, asking why she’s seeking Imperial favour. The two have a history together, as shown in The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, where Morgan is one of the most important figures involved in helping Thrawn return from anther galaxy.

It looks like we’re also going to be returning to Dathomir. We know of Morgan’s Nightsister heritage, but it’s never been revealed how she survived the Clone Wars when most of the others were wiped out by the Separatists. There’ll also be a return of the cyborg General Greivous. He was the commander who led the droid attack on Dathomir after Mother Talzin and Asajj Ventress betrayed Count Dooku and tried to assassinate him.

Considering how important Elsbeth becomes in later shows, it will be interesting to see how she first entered the Empire, and how they dealt with a Force user who wasn’t an Inquisitor, and hopefully reveal more of her connection to Thrawn.

Another character we’ll be seeing more of is Barriss Offee, the one time padawan of Jedi Master Luminari Undulli. She turned to the Dark Side near the end of the war, attempting to frame Ahsoka Tano for her attack on the Jedi Temple, leading to Ahsoka leaving the Order for good. It shows her fighting the Grand Inquisitor in a training scene, suggesting she joins the Inquisitorius like so many other former Jedi, something which fans have suspected for a long time. It’s possible we’ll get to see what happened to Luminara too, as it’s suggested in Star Wars: Rebels that she survived Order 66 before being captured by the Empire.

It seems that this season will follow the same format as Tales of the Jedi, where there was more than one storyline running through the show: one following Dooku, one following Ahsoka. There’s certainly plenty to be explored with Morgan Elsbeth and Barriss Offee, and it’s a good example of how these kinds of animated shows allow for stories to be told that are outside of the main saga, giving the backstory of side characters who would never get their own full series.
