‘The Mandalorian,’ Season 3, Episode 1, is the Perfect Starter

The latest series of The Mandalorian has got off to a great start, to be honest, there’s not a lot they could have done better. It really works to set up what’s coming, and if things follow the same course, season three looks to be a great ride. With that in mind, here are some things I noticed about episode one.

Nevarro

An important planet right from the first season, Nevarro makes another appearance, but a lot’s changed since we last saw it. Once a Tatooine-like Outer Rim planet, filled with bounty hunters and poverty, Nevarro has now become a trade centre for the sector, bringing wealth and prosperity to its inhabitants. The streets are clean and paved, there are new vendors and businesses opened, and people can finally enjoy their lives.

A lot of credit has to go to Greef Karga for his efforts here. He has put a lot into making the planet prosperous, but the appearance of the pirates shows his past life is a big problem that could work against him and Nevarro in the future.

The pirate gang were brilliant characters and had some of my favourite designs in the episode. They look like a spaced up version of Davey Jones’ crew, and I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of them.

Mandalorians

When I saw the scene with the Armourer and the Mandalorian kid, I thought for a minute it was a flashback scene with Din, though it soon became clear it wasn’t.

Is the young Mandalorian going to be important later on? Is he connected to other characters we’ve seen? Probably not, but they did seem to make a thing out of the ceremony, so maybe more will be revealed in time.

That leads us to Bo-Katan. Seeing her sitting on her throne like that, she looked totally sick of everything, like she didn’t care anymore. It’s understandable, really, as she’s spent more than 30 years trying to save Mandalore, and every time she’s been confounded by someone or something. Now, with no followers and no planet to go back to, I think she’s entitled to a little despondency.

Purgill

It’s such an amazing thing to see the Purgill again. It’s clear Grogu can sense them, and possibly communicate through the Force. The question now is how he interacts with them. Will he follow them, and what would he find if he did? After all, we know who else had a strong connection to the Purgill, and last time we saw him, the giant space whales disappeared into hyperspace with a certain Grand Admiral’s Star Destroyer.

What’s next?

Din Djarin is still eager to be redeemed and return to the Covert. Will he manage? He’s definitely going to return to Mandalore if it’s possible, and who knows what he’ll find there?

I thought restarting IG-11 could be a bad idea. Mando’s determined to get him fixed, but will he ever be a nurse droid again?

As a final note, it’s most likely just some background action, but there was a green Convor perched for a second on IG-11’s statue. Could it have an owner?

Let’s hope the rest of season 3 provides the answers!

Thanks for reading!
